ANIMAL EXPERIMENTATION – WHAT CAN WE DO? HOW CAN WE DO IT? AND HOW DO WE FEEL ABOUT IT?

This short workshop is intended to give a brief overview on the history of laboratory animal science until today, discuss pros and cons of using animal models, as well as the concept of the 3Rs of Russel and Burch (Replacement, Reduction and Refinement) and a culture of care.
Three goals will try to be achieved for the participants to take home: 
- Inform participants on what they need to do in case they need to use animals for scientific purposes in their scientific projects: training and all licenses needed. The author will discuss the state of the art procedures and guidance by discussing examples from the University of Minho.
- Explore the participants’ views regarding animal experimentation and its acceptance – in an exercise where each one will find out which ethics theory he/she mostly agrees on. 
- Discuss how animal welfare can also be improvement through science, contributing for the quality of research using animal models – an example from the authors research work will be shared.

SCIENTIFIC PAPERS: THE DO'S  & DON'TS

The workshop, coordinated by PhD Daniela Batista, aims to prepare students for a future in science. It will demonstrate some techniques for preparing scientific papers (journals, impact factors), as well as the complete publication process. It will also discuss some advice on what to do to improve articles and some of the most common mistakes in the publication process.

DATA ANALYSIS

In this workshop, PhD Bruno Castro will introduce the JAMOVI software and demonstrate some of the potentialities of this tool, using a hands-on approach that will demonstrate a less steep learning curve than for other software with more notoriety. The JAMOVI software (https://www.jamovi.org/) is a statistical and graphical computing environment inspired by some commercially available solutions. Although it is still under development, it is an interesting tool for users who are just starting out in data analysis and processing, who may gain initial experience and then migrate to more advanced software (e.g. SPSS, Statistica, RStudio). A particularly interesting feature is the integration with R, which can allow an easier learning curve for R. Alongside the use of this software, a brief introduction and review of some basic concepts of data analysis will be given. This workshop requires a computer with JAMOVI installed (https://www.jamovi.org/).

This workshop has a limited number of participants (25 participants).

HOW TO BE A SCIENCE INFLUENCER

In this workshop, guided by Andreia Pinho, the importance of science communication in the present world will be discussed. The founder of Science Wave Instagram page will present social media as a tool to communicate and explain science. How scientists can be influencers? Going from the creative process up to tips on how to be a good communicator, this workshop will show how science can reach everyone through social media. By joining this workshop, participants will have the opportunity to look into scientific methodology and convert it into social content to be shared.

AN HOUR OF PYTHON

In this workshop, Professor Björn will teach the basics of Python, using some simple examples relevant to biology/bioinformatics. He will demonstrate the basic data types, repetitions and decision making in the logical flow of the program. Python will be used to search sequence data on Genbank using pydna and formalize a simple cloning procedure. Prior to the workshop, please follow the instructions on the file "install_Anaconda_and_add_channel.pdf" inside the "Installation instructions" folder available at https://github.com/BjornFJohansson/An-Hour-of-Python.

This workshop has a limited number of participants (25 participants).

THE SCIENCE AND “NOT-SO-SCIENCE” OF DRUG DEVELOPMENT AND DESIGN

In this interactive workshop, a perspective of the Portuguese pharmaceutical industry will be presented with emphasis in two of the most successful cases. Examples will be given to illustrate the organisation, the activities, production of medicines and development of new drugs by companies. In addition, the process from drug discovery to commercialisation of medicines will be discussed in different dimensions, namely financial, ethical, scientific and commercial. To highlight the complexity of drug design, the audience will be invited to discuss the molecular design of specific drugs in order to improve pharmacokinetic parameters and activity.

With this workshop the participants will become familiar on how Portuguese pharmaceutical companies are organised, operate in the market and develop new products in their R&D departments. Furthermore, participants will get knowledge on the drug development process and on drug design for improvement of properties. An interactive activity will allow to apply these concepts to drugs used in clinical practice.

INSIDE A PhD - HOW TO BUILD A STRONG CV

In this workshop, PhD Rosana Alves will elucidate simple and efficient ways to start a career in science and how to prepare a well-structured and interesting CV that demonstrates a scientific profile in the most impactful way possible. How can we build a reputation in such a vast and diverse scientific universe? It will address what is expected from a CV in the research area as in the industrial area, which aspects we will have to adapt and which steps to follow to achieve success. After a short presentation, participants will have the opportunity to ask questions in a Q&A session.

SCIENTIFIC ILLUSTRATION: SOFTWARE, DATABASES, AND TIPS

In this workshop, PhD Henrique Fernandes will try to highlight some important points about scientific illustration, its use, and also copyright issues. The workshop will focus on some vector drawing programs and also molecular visualization programs, like Avogadro and VMD. Lastly, some databases of scientific illustrations with quality content to help the design of professional-looking scientific illustrations will also be presented.
For the workshop, prior installation of the following free software is advised: Avogadro (http://avogadro.cc) and VMD (http://bit.ly/VMDsoftware).

This workshop has a limited number of participants (20 participants).
